Beneath the Makeup

What do you do when you have invested years in a relationship only to discover that it seems to be a dead end? If you hold on to the bitter end(and it will be bitter) you can pretty much guarantee that you will not end as friends.

So this seems to be my reality. I never did a proper introduction post on this blog. I do believe it is time to go beneath the makeup and touch on the real me. I am 32 and have for the last 3.5 years spent my life with an amazing woman whom I fell in love with almost instantly. We have weathered a few storms. We are blessed beyond measure to be the parents of our amazing 2 year old son. Somewhere along the lines we stopped being a couple and just became parents. Both sharing the common desire to make our son as happy as could be. All the while growing further apart as a couple. We no longer connect on any level other then as parents. There are no kisses and hugs goodbye. There are no butterflies….My greatest regret…

So when the breakdown occurs what do you do? Do you hope for the best and spend year after year unsatisfied? I miss the feeling of being held and being desired. I miss laughing with her till my cheeks hurt…I miss my friend…I miss being happy at home.

What would you do?

Hot Mama

The Balm Hot Mama

The seasons are changing and with that comes a whole new world of possibilities with our makeup routine. My own routine definitely takes on more color as it gets hotter outside. I tend to go for more neutral colors in the winter with the exception of red lips… I mean really who does not love a great red lip in the winter.

I recently bought The Balm’s Hot Mama blush as I had not tried it and had heard some good things about it. My usual go to blush is Nars orgasm. It compliments my fair skin nicely. I have been using Hot Mama now for a couple of weeks and feel it is time to be able to fairly and accurately review the product.

In a couple of words IT ROCKS!!!! It is not to different from Nars orgasm actually. Hot mama is has a tad more peach to it with  shimmer. Hot Mama gives my cheeks a glow that no other blush including Nars orgasm has been able to do. It is very pigmented and I can easily over do it but a slight blending with my trusty Nars Botan Brush quickly and effortlessly solves that issue. If you have never tried this brush you are missing out big time! It is costly but will blend like no other brush you own. It looks like this.

Nars Botan Brush

Nars Botan Brush

This brush will cost you $75.00. I know that is a lot of money for some people to spend on 1 brush but I promise you will not be disappointed. I call it a Kabuki on steroids as the head of this brush is massive. If you are interested in buying it you can get it here..

http://www.narscosmetics.com/artist-tools/brushes/kabuki-brushes/

O.K. back to The Balm’s Hot Mama. This is a beautiful peachy coral blush. It comes housed in a square stiff cardboard case. The magnetic closure is very strong and it does seem secure. I have no worries about traveling with this blush. This is what the pan looks like…

And a swatch…

Swatch of Hot Mama

I really can not say enough good things about this blush. It is all around amazing. I find it superior to Nars orgasm although Nars orgasm is still one of my favorites. If you are interested in buying this blush(and you should) you can pick it here for $20.00 …http://www.thebalm.com/hot-mama.html

This blush is actually an all in one product. Meaning it can be used on the eyes and cheeks. I have yet to try it as a shadow as it just works so well for my cheeks. I will be trying that soon though. I give this blush a 5 out of 5 and say it is a must own. For me this is the perfect summer time blush.

Do not forget I am doing a world-wide giveaway when I hit 1000 followers. Like this post, comment and follow. The faster we get 1000 the quicker you can spend the $50!! i really appreciate the support I have gotten this far and hope to meet a lot of new beauty junkies as time goes by. I would really love comments and feedback. Let me know about what your favorite blush is. How do you like my blog? Are you going to indulge in Hot Mama? I welcome all interactions with other bloggers and look forward to talking to a;; of you. Thanks for reading…`

For anyone who has never contoured and highlighted their face you MUST try it !!! It photographs beautifully and can transform your entire face and look. What I am going to talk about today is the technique my all time favorite makeup artist uses..Wayne Goss from http://gossmakeupartist.blogspot.com/ . Check him out if you have not done so because he is awesomeness at its best! Anyway if you are looking to hide a feature than those are the areas you want to use the darker contour color on.

O.K. let’s get started. The first thing I typically do is my eyes. Fall out is much easier to wipe away when your face is bare and not covered in foundation and powder. All you end up doing is ruining your foundation otherwise.

Next you want to apply your moisturizer and primer or whatever your morning skin care routine consists of. I prefer M.A.C. Prep++Prime. Here is a link to buy this item if you want to experience it awesomeness for yourself!!

After I am all done with my skin care I pull out my trusty BH Cosmetics 10 Color Camouflage and Concealer Palette. It looks like this…

BH Cosmetics

BH Cosmetics Concealer Palette

You can buy this Palette for only $12.95 !!! Get it here  http://www.bhcosmetics.com/products/10-color-camouflage-and-concealer-palette/

What you want to do is take 2 clean concealer brushes..1 for the light color and 1 for the dark color. You need a color that is much lighter than your skin tone and use that to highlight the areas of your face you want to stand out. Your cheek bones, under your eyes, down your nose, your cupids bow. Then take a darker color that is at least 2 or 3 colors darker than your skin tone and use that to contour or to push back the features you do not want to stand out. The hollows of your cheeks, down both sides of your nose, and the perimeter of your face is what I do. We are trying to create shadows and not have our face be one flat color. This is what it should look like at this point.

I know that if you have never seen this done before that you probably think i have lost my mind but just wait till you see the finishes results. Amazing!! This WILL change your life(for the better LOL) just give it a try.

After you have finished placing your concealer grab a brush my favorite by far for this kind of work is Shiseido‘s Perfect Foundation Brush. It is flat-out amazing and I can not say enough good things about this brush. It really is perfect! The size is great. It is rather short and I love it because it allows me to really get the control I want. The head is compact and nice and dense. Just perfect! It keeps the colors in the same area you applied them while blending like a dream. So you end up with just what you want. I find using a brush with a large head moves the product around too much and muddies my look instead of just blending the colors out.
Here is a link to this amazing brush..http://www.shiseido.com/foundation-brush/0729238108165,en_US,pd.html

A pic as well…

Best of all for a brush of this quality it will only cost you $30.00!! Pretty great really.

O.K. now that you have chosen your brush and you look like you are a mad woman or man LOL we can start blending. Before you pick up your brush though you need to get a liquid foundation that matches your skin tone. I am currently using Estee Lauder Double Wear maxim Cover camouflage makeup for face and Body SPF 15. I do like it. I was not sure I would but it actually covers great and is really nice to blend with. A little goes a long way..This is what it looks like..

Estee Lauder Double Wear

You can pick this foundation up here for $ $33.50.

http://www.esteelauder.com/product/643/13015/Product-Catalog/Makeup/Face/Foundations/Double-Wear/Maximum-Cover-Camouflage-Makeup-for-Face-and-Body-Broad-Spectrum-SPF15/index.tmpl

I use a small pea sized amount and dot this all over my face on top of the concealer. It looks something like this..

Looking crazy.LOL

Concealer with dotted foundation on top.

Now it is time to take your brush and in small circle motions start to blend. Taking care to keep the colors in the general area that you placed them. This really does do wonders for pictures. If you have photos ahead you really should give this a try.It is life changing!! In the next photo you are going to see the finished results. keep in mind that this is NOT natural light and I have added powder in 2 different shades after the blending.  Before we get to the photo of the finished photos let me show you what powders I used. To be honest my absolute favorite powder in the world is M.A.C Studio Fix Powder plus Foundation it is the best I have found. You can use it on its own in a pinch as well. I also use it for mid day touch ups too. M.A.C has a ton of shades and that makes it nice for the really pale women and the really dark women too. It will cost you $27.00 and you can pick it up on M.A.C’s website here

http://www.maccosmetics.com/product/shaded/158/251/Studio-Fix-Powder-Plus-Foundation/index.tmpl

In the next pic the M.A.C Studio Fix Powder is the round powder and the square one is Cargo Blue_Ray Pressed Powder. The Cargo powder is also very good and comes in a close 2nd in my book. I have tried to use up this powder for a while now and have gone through 4 of the Studio Fix powders by M.A.C in the same time span. Obviously M.A.C is my preference. However, for this look I need a slightly darker powder for the area’s that I added the darker Concealer. The cargo Powder was perfect for this. You can pick up the Cargo Powder for $32.00 here

http://www.cargocosmetics.com/products/face/blu_ray-pressed-powder

Here is what both powders look like and I hope you can see in the picture that the Cargo is darker.

After applying my powder I used a blush by The Balm in Hot Mama. I love love this blush and will review it for you all soon. I also used a small amount of M.A.C blush in Trace Gold and on my eyes I have M.A.C’s Quite Natural Paint Pot with Haux  on the lid and cranberry(my new go to) and Swiss Chocolate in the crease. All Shadows are also by M.A.C. As a highlight under my brow I used Urban Decay’s Virgin and in my inner tear duct I used Sin. Both shadows are from my Urban Decay Naked Palette. If you are going to buy just 1 palette then I seriously suggest you buy this one. It is the BOMB!! I can review it if anyone would like. Just comment below. If you do want to buy it you can pick it up for $50.00 at Sephora or online from Urban Decay at http://www.urbandecay.com/naked-palette-eyeshadow-by-urban-decay/245,default,pd.html?start=5&cgid=12_1

The last thing i have on is my Embrace Me lipstick by M.A.C and if you read my earlier posts then you know how much I LOVE it!! Anyway onto the indoor pictures.

I have decided what I am going to do for my 1,000 follower giveaway.. Are you ready to find out? Well I sure hope so… O.K. here goes…Anyone who knows me knows that I am a complete palette junkie..Whats not to love? All those gorgeous colors in one easy to travel with palette. I was thinking I would do one of my favorite palettes.. Like the Urban Decay Naked Palette. Or maybe the Lorac Pro Palette…Then I got to thinking well maybe palettes are not going to be the winners thing. Maybe they wont care for a palette. So I decided this… I will take price of the palette I was going to buy, UD Naked, which is $50.00 USD. Whatever the winner would care for that is beauty related up to that price point I will purchase for them.  If the winner does want the Urban Decay Naked 1 or 2 palette then of course that is what I will buy. The item or items chosen will then be mailed to the winner. I will purchase items online and have them shipped to the winner. Good Luck and do not forget to follow this blog and like and share this post on your social network sites. The more you share the faster I will hit 1,000 and the faster you will be able to spend that $50 !!!

M.A.C. Embrace Me

M.A.C. Embrace Me

It has finally happened.I have found my Holy Grail Lipstick!! Of course my very first thought was sharing it with all of you here.  M.A.C Embrace Me lipstick was released with part of the Fashion Set Collections for Summer of 2013. If you were luckily enough to snag yourself one for the short time they were available before quickly selling out online and in stores well then you go girl!!! If you were lucky enough to snag more then 1 well then let me know ASAP I will be needing backups LOL. M.A.C Limited Edition lippies are one of my most favorite things in the world I must admit. I also have a real love for bright pink lipsticks so this was perfect for me. The moment I saw this beautiful lipstick i knew I had to have it but of course it was sold out…I was lucky enough to snag one on a blog sale however. I did pay over retail of course but not too awfully high compared to EBAY prices. This lipstick is described as a medium-dark fuchsia pink with blue undertones. It is absolutely stunning !!! Here is a swatch…

This lipstick is a matte formula and not too drying in my opinion. I applied this before work at 9am and re-applied after lunch at 2 pm although it was not because it was necessary more so because I wanted to experience the awesomeness of this lipstick again. I did not need to reapply before leaving the office at 6:20 pm. Basically if applied correctly this lipstick will last all day and then some…If you are lucky enough to get your hands on one of these babies then do it you wont regret it(unless you hate bright pink lips). And of course grab one for me too!!

Has anyone tried this lipstick and if not do you want too?

I know this post is extremely late and I am deeply sorry… I am just getting over a nasty cold. Anyway on to the review!!! Last week I opened my mailbox to find April’s Birchbox waiting for me. Well I was extremly excited as Birchbox is one of my favorite subscription services that I am a member of. Only topped by the amazing Glossybox! So if you are a Beauty Box Virgin then get your butt in gear already and sign up for a service! I promise you will not regret it. Every month wont be equal of course but hey that’s part f the fun of it! You never know what you will find inside your box! Ok lets get on to Aprils’s Birchbox already.

Here is what the box looks like when you pull it out of your mailbox.

Birchbox Package

Birchbox Package

After you open the box you will remove another box. This month Birchbox teamed up with Women’sHealth Magazine. All items in this month’s box were hand picked by the editors of Women’sHealth.  According to the advertising the box is supposed to focus on wellness Here is what the actual box looked like.

And here is the box opened and the tissue paper opened as well.

Now lets get to this month’s items! First thing that I pulled from the box was a very generous sample of Firm Hold Hair Gel by Number 4 Hair Care. I have had a chance to use this item 3 times and i must say that I love it. It is very thick and feels like super thick glue in your hands but once you have it in your hair and give a little scrunch it coats the hair nicely. I use a diffuser on my blow dryer and the results are awesome. It has the perfect hold and lasts all day without wearing down and my hair turning frizzy. I do wash it out before bed as sleeping with it in your hair would probably not be very comfortable  If you are someone who like a light hold this is NOT for you. Full size is $32.00. I would say the sample they gave us will last me for at least 10-15 times.

The next item I will review is a Sumita Full size eye shadow pencil that also arrived in April’s box. It is in the color Prairna and is a grassy green with micro shimmer. I have not tried it as of yet but I did swatch it for you all. I am just not one for green eye shadow but if you are then I am sure this would make an awesome base for your shadow.  A full size is $11.00. Keep in mind that the monthly price for this service is only $10.00!!! That one product was worth the cost of the entire box of items!! Here is the swatch and photo.

Next we have a product that I really really loved. That is the Yes to Cucumbers On-the-Go Facial Towelette. I received 3 single size packets an boy are they awesome. I would totally purchase the full size product and more then likely will. They have the most amazing cucumber smell. They just smell fresh and clean. They take off all your makeup including gel eyeliner. I have found with other makeup wipes that they do not remove my eye makeup or heavy foundations/concealers. I did not have that problem with these what so ever. I completely recommend these wipes. These would be perfect for travel and to keep in your purse or desk. I will get them for my kit as well. i know a lot of makeup artist like to use baby wipes as they are cost effective but I find they are rougher on the skin and I have problems removing gel liner and mascara with them. These are like heaven for your face!! Best of all the full size package is only $9.99!

We also received a sample card with 2 samples on it. The first side was Yes to Grapefruit Correct & Repair Daily Facial Scrub. I really did enjoy this as well. Although it was only enough for 1 use. It smelled divine and did not dry out my already dry skin. A BIG plus. The second side of the card contained Yes to Grapefruit Correct & Repair Dark Spot Correcting Serum. The directions said that after cleaning to apply a layer to face and neck for smooth, even and glowing skin. I did give that a try and can not really tell you how it works as it would take longer then 1 use to see those results. It did however feel nice on my face and smell good. Full size is $19.99 and a full size of the face scrub is $9.99.

And the final product I received is a sample packet of Pure Advanced Antioxidant Therapy Vitivia Pro Vitamin. These are capsules that squeeze out and apply to your face.  It contains 3 brown capsules of Vitamin C 10% used to reduce hyper pigmentation  fight wrinkles and age spots. These capsules are applied in the morning before your moisturizer and makeup. It also contained 3 orange capsules of Vitamin A(retinol) at 0.15%. these capsules are used for refining pore, smoothing fine lines to reveal more youthful looking skin and also reduces skin inflammation. They are applied in the evening and followed after by your moisturizer. I did try these and did enjoy them. I love serums and Vitamins so this was a win win for me. Again I do believe I would need longer then 3 days to give accurate results. Full size is $55.00 per vitamin type.

There was also a subscription card at the bottom of my box for a free $10 subscription to Women’sHeath Magazine and in fine print it states that if you do not want it you can opt to receive a $10 check instead.  So let’s get this straight. I paid $10 for this box and I can receive from Women’sHealth Magazine a $10 check….So my box was free!!! And I get all these amazing goodies!!! Really if you were not a believer in Beauty Boxes before this review I sure hope you are now….here is a link to sign up for your own Birchbox.

April IPSY Bag Review….

If you have not yet jumped on the beauty box band wagon then what the heck are you waiting for?? I can now honestly say that I love my beauty box subscriptions. Each month I put out a minimal fee and in my mailbox I get a nice package with 4-6 deluxe size products. The brands can range from Tarte, Pixi and  Benifit to all natural beauty products. For the small fee that these services charge I can not help but tell you all that this is one hell of a deal. So tonight lets jump right into April 2013’s  IPSY Bag.

First off April’s bag arrived like all IPSY bags do. In an adorable metalic pink bubble mailer. Which just happened to fit in perfectly with this months theme “Pink”. Each month IPSY has a different theme for the items you receive. Lets take a look at how my bag arrived…

Ipsy Mailer April 2013

Ipsy Mailer April 2013

One of the things that I just adore about IPSY is that not only is the service only $10 a month ( yes I really said only $10) your items also ship free. So the idea here is that each month you will get something new and exciting in your mail. You never know what the months’ bag is going to hold. Also the items come stored nicely in a cute little makeup bag. Each month you also get a makeup bag and that alone I am sure is worth $5.

Lets take a look at each item now. First off I received a deluxe sample of bigsexyhair powder play. Full size retail is $15.95 at Ulta.

Next we have a Full Size Be a Bombshell blush in Sweet Cheeks. Retail is $16 at beabombshellcosmetics.com. Which is more than I paid for the entire bag of products!! Can you say Great Value!!! This blush is a gorgeous pink color and very pigmented. It goes on smooth and blends like a dream. I totally would say this is worth the $16 retail price.

Next up is another full size product! This on a Dou eyeshadow by Two Cosmetics. This brand I am not familiar with but a quick google search tells me that retail for this shadow is $5.75 at twocosmetics.com. This eyeshadow was not my favorite. They are just OK. They have decent pigmentation but they are a little chalky. Fall out was not an issue. The left side of the duo holds a shimmer light pink and the right side an almost rose matte shadow. Both could double as a blush in a pinch…

Ok and yes another full size product! Remember everyone I only paid $10 for this service! At this point in opening my bag I was already extremely pleased with April’s bag and to see yet another full size item just cemented for me that I will definitely be subscribing to IPSY for a long while. The final item I got was a full size polish from Sation nail lacquer for ipsy as the box reads. I have never heard of this brand and I am not a huge polish freak but it is a nice color non the less.
